The history behind Historic Old Town
When miners flocked to the region in search of silver and other precious metals, they needed a place to stay. Old Town was therefore established in the 19th century, its streets lined with tiny shacks. But despite the humble environs, Old Town had well over 400 million dollars’ worth of silver extracted from the nearby hills during its heyday, creating millionaires. One example? George Hearst, the father of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst.
As Old Town and its residents grew more prosperous, homes started to become larger. But since the center of Old Town was already populated with smaller residences, these upscale dwellings were located in the eastern part of the community. This is still the case today, as homes closer to the slopes offer more space as well as access to the ski slopes.
Main Street continues to be the center of activity, not just in Historic Old Town, but in Park City. Its first merchants set up shops that offered the essentials to make it big in the silver-rich mountains of the region. - Park Silly Sunday Market is something you shouldn’t miss in Historic Old Town. This seasonal market runs from June through September, stretching across the entire length of Main Street on Sundays.
